About
Three Rings Brewery is a family brewery in McPherson, owned by father and son Brian and Ian Smith. Its name comes from a family story that reaches back more than 500 years. The owners’ 12th-great-grandfather, Berend Brauer, was brewmaster in Einbeck, Germany, in the early 1500s, and Einbeck beer was a favorite of Martin Luther. According to the brewery, Brauer supplied a cask for Luther’s wedding. Legend says Luther drank from a large stein with three rings, which he said stood for the Ten Commandments, the Apostles’ Creed and the Lord’s Prayer. That image of Luther drinking the family’s beer from a three-ringed stein inspired the name, and the brewery sees itself as reviving a long family brewing tradition. It aims to make unique, flavorful, high-quality beers. The taproom pours 12 beers, from year-round to seasonal and small-batch releases, and some beers are distributed and sold to go.
